The Business Advisory Council
Invitation to Join the Business Advisory Council at Goodwill Industries
Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit operates a program called Within Reach serving individuals who are chronically unemployed, and the prospective employers who may hire them. The program operates as a labor market intermediary, providing training to those who have been living in poverty that meets the needs and expectation of employer partners. The focus is on serving employers who have high turnover or are struggling to find entry-level employees. The interests of the business community are represented through a Business Advisory Council (BAC) comprised of employer representatives from a variety of service and industrial businesses. The BAC provides support, direction, and advice to ensure that the graduates are people that they want to hire. The focus is on soft skills development and creating a “work identity” within program participants. The program has established a high level of success that has generated interest nationwide. Typical BAC activities are to:

  • Assess Occupational Needs
  • Guide Curricula on an ongoing basis
  • Client Placement
  • Transitional / Internship Placements
  • Identify Community Resources
  • Monitor Program
  • Arrange Site Visits to Potential Employers
  • Provide Speakers
  • Improve Community Relations
  • Market the program to other potential employers
Currently the Business Advisory Council has 12 members. The goal is to eventually reach 25 employer partners.
If there is interest in joining the Goodwill Business Advisory Council, or if you have further questions, please contact Joe Evans, Director – Detroit Career Center at 313-964-3900, ext. 505, or jevans@goodwilldetroit.org.

Volunteering for Special Olympics Michigan can not only be a rewarding experience for you, it could be something that you can introduce to your co-workers as a team building experience for your organization.
Not only is Special Olympics Michigan always looking for volunteers; they are also in need of a great deal of financial support. SOMI is a non-profit organization supported entirely by private funding and without support of state or federal funds and like many organizations, they are facing some hard financial times and need support to continue to offer their programs to the athletes involved throughout the state.

    Capuchin Soup Kitchen
The Capuchin Soup Kitchen is rooted in the Franciscan tradition. It serves the poor who suffer from the lack of basic human needs such as, food, clothing and household necessities. Volunteers at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen have been depended upon since the Kitchen’s inception in 1929. The time and efforts of others in the community is at the heart of our mission of concern and commitment to the poor. The hours of service given by volunteers translates into over 30 additional full time staff that would have to be employed and insures that we are able to return eighty-nine cents of every donated dollar to direct client services.
Some of our most popular volunteer opportunities include:
    • Serving meals and assisting in the kitchens
    • Sorting and sizing clothing
    • Preparing emergency food packages
    • Working in the Earthworks Garden
    • Tutoring, teaching and mentoring children and teens (M-F 4 pm – 6 pm)
    • Thanksgiving Basket Give away
    • Christmas Toy Program
    • Assisting at our special events held throughout the year
If you want to volunteer at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen we ask you to bring three important things with you: a willingness to work hard, an open and positive attitude, and a smile. We can promise you that you will work hard, have some fun, and learn a great deal about yourself and your fellow human beings.
